Nylon monofilament suture is made of monofilament polyamid 6&66 by extruding a strong uniform strand. Nylon suture is quite pliable and do not support bacteial growth with it’s sleepy surface. The elasticity of nylon suture makes it useful in retention and skin closure. Good handing and pliability characteristics make knot easy and secure.

Monofilament Poliglecaprone suture copolymer has been found to be nonantigenic, nonpyrogenic and elicits only a slight tissue reaction during absorption. Monofilament Poliglecaprone suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, but not for use in cardiovascular or neurological tissues, microsurgery, or ophthalmic surgery.

Multifilament vs. Monofilament Suture Materials Monofilament suture materials such as glycomer-631, polydioxanone, and polypropylene, are often selected since they cause less tissue drag and are less likely to track and harbour bacteria at the surgical sites. Monofilament suture materials are generally harder to handle than multifilament suture because of their memory. Plain catgut Chromic catgut Polyglycolide (P.G.A.) Polydioxanone (PDS) ; Description: Adsorbable biological suture material. Plain is an adsorbable suture made by twisting together strands of purified collagen taken from bovine intestines. The natural plain thread is precision ground in order to achieve a monofilament character and treated with a glycerol containing solution.

The body has the strongest reaction to this suture and will often scar over. Monofilament absorbable sutures are preferable in contaminated wounds. Nylon or Polybutester are considered standard epidermal sutures for most situations. Polypropylene is ideal for running subcuticular sutures, and either Silk or Polyester for mucosal applications.

For facial wounds, a smaller gauge suture such as 6.0 is used. For wounds under greater stress and of less cosmetic importance such as a thigh laceration, a 4.0 suture would be appropriate. Antiseptic Solution and Saline The antiseptic solution is for cleansing the skin around the wound and saline is used to cleanse and irrigate the wound itself.

The ideal suture is the smallest possible to produce uniform tensile strength, securely hold the wound for the required time for healing, then be absorbed. A monofilament with good handling and excellent elasticity. It responds well to tissue oedema, and is also suited to subcuticular running sutures. Polypropylene (Prolene®, Surgilene®, Surgipro®) A monofilament polymer with a very low coefficient of friction making it the suture of choice for running subcuticular stitches.
